Description A white crystalline powder
Solubility Freely soluble in water, sparingly soluble in ethanol 95%
Identification 'A' When heated, it melts, swells up and burns, and an odour of burnt sugar is perceptible
Identification 'B' A copious red precipitate is formed with potassium cupri-tartrate soultion.
Appearance and odour of solution The solution should be clear not more intensely coloured than reference solution BYS7 and is odourless
Acidity or alkalinity The solution is colourless and not more than 0.15 mI of 0.1 M sodium hydroxide is required to change the colour of the solution to pink.
